Like Fire and Water

You know, now that Dean Esmay has become Roman Catholic and discovered Mark Shea's website, I'm actually looking forward to the confrontation when Dean finally stumbles across one of Mark's "Bush is the worst President EVER" posts or when he pretends that he knew Iraq was a bad, sinful, doomed idea from the beginning and that we were lied into going to war.

Has Bush seriously fumbled on the immigration issue? Si, si.

Here's the thing, though: Bush has invaded fewer countries than Bill Clinton and has actually had the wherewithal not to simply cut and run when we get a bloody nose. Do you want to know what Iraq and Afghanistan will look like if we leave? They'll look like Somalia: "peaceful" due to Islamists having killed or driven out everyone else. We've also had fewer bombings against American targets while Bush was in office than during Clinton's terms. Apparently the world liked us more in the 1990's...for all the good that's done us. If the Axis of Weasels liked us better under Clinton then I'd have to say that anything done to tick them off pretty much elevates that President in my book.

Can't believe Mark wrote that. I suppose there's a little bit of Jimmy Carter in him.

There's also a lack of historical perspective. The passions of the moment lead people to make startling statements.

I agree: Mark's a fantastic apologist and a talented writer, but when it comes to the Iraq war he's become completely unhinged. I'm serious; not only does he become illogical, but his writing, which is normally impeccable, becomes sloppy as well. It's bizarre. It's to the point where I'll recommend people to his apologetics site but try to refrain from recommending his blog.

Enh. The Vatican opposed the invasion so I'm not surprised if he takes an anti-Bush position on that.

I don't bother arguing with people much anymore with people who otherwise hyperventilate obsessively about Bush and Iraq. Bush Derangement Syndrome will begin petering out in 2009. We have to just wait it out, there really is no treatment.

I can. His stuff apart from basic apologetics is frankly horrible both in sloppy "logic", theological misunderstandings, and misappropriation of facts. But that is what activists like him do unfortunately.

Um, I think that is unfair to Jimmy Carter (and I am no Carter fan).

Well said but when one takes a "ready, fire, aim" approach, they are going to make a lot of mistakes. At least David Armstrong (another writer very good at basic apologetics) as a rule avoids the geopolitical issues. He is no more competent in them than Mark is but his refraining from them (and playing to his strengths) shows a wisdom that I wish Mark would learn from.
